I was educated abroad and at boarding school in Scotland. I graduated from Edinburgh University in 1986. My early Ophthalmology training was in Edinburgh after which I was appointed Senior Registrar at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle. I completed a further year as a clinical fellow training at the Sydney Eye Hospital, Australia before being appointed Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Portsmouth in 1998. I was the lead Clinical Tutor in the department from 1999-2002 and I have been the Clinical Director of the Eye Unit from 2002-2008. I am currently the Director of the regional Diabetic Retinal Screening Programme and have been since it was set up in 2007.
Academically I have published many papers in scientific journals and I am currently an Editor of the journal of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, "EYE". www.nature.com/eye/index.html
I have written a book "The eye in primary care" that has sold over 2,000 copies and have contributed chapters to several other textbooks.
I practice general ophthalmology with particular special interests in:
- Small incision cataract surgery
- Oculoplastics (lid surgery) and Cosmetic surgery
- Lacrimal disease (watering eyes)
